David Craig - Founder and Principal

When venture capital is not investing, a startup biotech still has a path. That is the premise I build on. David Craig is the president and CEO of Sarcomatrix Therapeutics, a virtual, pre-IND biotech developing oral small molecule and protein therapies for Duchenne muscular dystrophy and other neuromuscular diseases. A pharmacist by training with an MBA, he built and developed therapeutics at Amgen, Gilead, and Portola Pharmaceuticals before co-founding Sarcomatrix in 2022 to carry forward science he was convinced would otherwise sit on a shelf.

I started in the pharmaceutical industry in 1986. In the years since, I have worked every seam of the drug development stack advancing candidate therapeutics into clinic or commercialization across preclinical strategy, Chemistry, Manufacturing, and Controls (CMC), Investigational New Drug (IND) enabling programs, fundraising, and business development. What holds my attention now is the rare disease problem, where the science often exists and the model for funding and building around it does not.

So I use that experience to redefine how a startup biotech gets built. Non-dilutive capital as a strategy rather than a backup, a virtual operating model, and milestones that earn the next dollar. It gives researchers with a promising asset, patient advocates carrying a community, and parents looking for something that does not yet exist a path forward. For founders, it is a roadmap.

D. Craig Consulting brings that work to emerging biotechs as fractional leadership and hands-on advisory.

From the author

“This is not a book about what biotech used to be. The capital, the science, and the regulatory landscape have all shifted, and too many founders are still operating from an old playbook. I wrote a guide to building a company in the environment that exists now, for the people doing the building and the people backing them,” said David Craig. for the investors, board members, and executives building the next generation of biotech companies.
